ABOUT THIS COMMITTEE

The Mediterranean and East African Coastal Alliance encompasses the rich cultures and
states along the Mediterranean Sea and the East African coast, including the Ottoman Empire and key coastal city-states like Cairo, Aleppo, Kilwa, and Mogadishu. Goods from East Africa, like ivory and gold, were in high demand in both Asian and Mediterranean markets. This geopolitical area was key in trading Middle Eastern and Asian goods to Europe. East African states often formed alliances with traders and empires in the region, including the Ottomans and Arabian merchants, to enhance their trade positions and protect their interests from rivals.

The Silk Road was crucial in connecting the Mediterranean states and East Africa, facilitating trade and cultural exchanges, and diplomatic relations. This interconnectedness shaped the economic and cultural landscapes of these regions, influencing their development throughout history. Delegates will address the challenges and opportunities of trade, security, and cultural exchange in this strategically significant region while focusing on enhancing maritime trade networks, protecting against piracy, and fostering diplomatic ties that enhance regional stability and economic prosperity.
